Huntington's not the only one with problems...

The U.S. State Dept revoked the visa of a Muslim scholar from Switzerland just a few days before he was to begin teaching at the University of Notre Dame. They wouldn't give specifics as to why. Nothing in the scholar's past has him linked to terrorist activities, other than he has been critical of Israel and the war in Iraq.

At least the State Dept's not going after Sanders. If that's a little consolation....

I remember following this pretty closely in the fall when the visa was rejected and the chicago papers gave him a chance to openly defend every point along the way. The response for the state has been classic, with comments similar to that in the yahoo article:

"At the time, the Department of Homeland Security said the decision was based on "public safety or national security interests" and pointed to federal law applying to aliens who have used a "position of prominence ... to endorse or espouse terrorist activity."

Apparently things like criticizing the war on terror+criticizing US involvement with Israel+being Muslim= terrorism. I'm proud to say that I think the HC board of trustees as shown a bit more wisdom in the decision process than that. I mean, imagine if an HC prof were against the war in Iraq and against US involvement in Israel plus an open theist! I guess that's not too hard to imagine...at least the board can't control working rights as a whole.

But we really don't know it is all confidential...Maybe the board really is operating as a branch of homeland security and Sanders is a Muslim...

Conspiracy theories abound...
