I'm not sure how well this applies to MM, since there doesn't seem much to debate about this little find, but it seems there's more than meets the eye concerning Fred Phelps -- ye old creator of the godhatesfags.com website. The fairly ultra-right conservative FrontPage magazine recently published a bio on Mr. Phelps, in which they made the weird yet completely valid claim that Phelps is actually a crazy leftist. Their evidence? Phelps has, on occasion:
- Demonstrated against Jerry Falwell, James Dobson and Pat Robertson
- Spoken in support of Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussein
- Put his weight behind Al Gore's 1988 presidential campaign
- Ran for the Democratic nomination for Governor in Kansas in '90, '94 & '98
- Won 30% of the Democratic primary vote in the 1992 U.S. Senate race in Kansas
Hurray.

Ok, Jonny, I totally agree with you. And Ryan, that's the problem. This guy doesn't give anyone a way out; apparently, you just need to die if you're in one of his offending camps.
The reason he was listed in the article for opposing Jimmy D and FOF was because they were too lenient and condoning of the gay lifestyle, because FOF sponsors and promotes workshops designed to help gay people "leave their lifestyle behind" and become straight. While I don't think FOF has a realistic picture here, what concerns me is Phelps' reaction. If he hates gay people, but doesn't want to see them "rehabbed" into being straight (a laughable concept anyway), then what does he want?
Seems like he may indeed have a lot in common with the genocide driven, dictatorial mindset.
s.m.w.j.t.b.j., i don't mean to give phelps any more attention than he ought to get, but i thought it important to realize how unique his snowflake was. too often we reduce him to an ultraconservative bigot, when, in actuality, he's a bigoted horse of a totally different bigoted ranch. also, i don't hate survivor. just ranch dressing.
also, to paco: sorry i missed you at the airport, man. otherwise, we could have sang america the burning together in front of the security people at the gate. then you could have stayed in chicago with us courtesy of the nice folks at the cook county jail. but don't worry, apparently people break out of there all the time.
